Poetry Book & Pen-and-Ink
Overview

In collaboration with poet Michelle Gerrard, I created 25 original pen-and-ink illustrations for her poetry collection Somewhere In Between — a book exploring thresholds, memory, grief, healing, and feminine transformation.

Each drawing was custom-crafted to live in deep conversation with the written word, echoing the emotional resonance and liminal themes present throughout the collection. The final result is a seamless fusion of fine art and poetry, inviting the reader into the quiet, potent places in-between.

Key Contributions:

1. Visual Interpretation & Creative Direction

  • Deep reading and conceptual mapping of each poem
  • Designed a symbolic visual language using contrast, texture, and minimalism
  • Created narrative continuity between visual entries to mirror poetic tone

2. Original Artwork

  • 25 hand-drawn pen-and-ink illustrations using fine-liner and pointillism techniques
  • Scanned and digitally refined while preserving the analog texture
  • Maintained black-and-white cohesion to complement the book’s tone

3. Book Design Support

  • Assisted in layout consultation and image placement
  • Helped prepare print-ready image assets for press
  • Contributed to back cover artwork and interior spacing rhythm

Tools Used:

  • Micron Pens, Rotring Isographs, Bristol board
  • Affinity Photo, Photoshop (for digitizing and clean-up)
  • Adobe InDesign (layout support)
