How a commission works

From first conversation to finished wall

Site and brief

I walk the space in person where I can, or work from photographs, plans and elevations. We talk about what the space is for, who moves through it, and what you want people to feel when they arrive.

Concept and colour

You receive sketches and a colour study developed for your architecture, your light and your surroundings. Nothing is painted until the design is right on paper.

Preparation and scaling

Surfaces are prepared, the design is scaled and transferred, and materials are specified for the substrate and the climate. Exterior work is sealed for weather and UV.

Painting on site

I paint the work by hand. Most projects take four to eight days on site, and I work around your operating hours where a space needs to stay open.

Most commissions run four to eight weeks from first conversation to finished wall. Architects and designers are welcome at any stage, including concept and specification.

The practical side of a mural

A mural lives on a real wall. It also has to work inside a building and a schedule. These are the details I look at early, so the proposal is clear and nobody is improvising from a ladder on day three.

Interior and exterior work

I paint both. Materials and finishes are chosen for the wall, the climate and the amount of exposure the work will receive.

Surface preparation

The wall is assessed before the estimate is final. Cleaning, repairs and primer are included in the scope where they are needed.

Weather and UV protection

Exterior work uses materials suited to local weather and sun exposure. Any protective finish is specified for the surface rather than added as an afterthought.

Access and working hours

Lifts, scaffolding, permits and restricted access are identified early. Many spaces can remain open, with painting arranged around quieter hours where possible.

Design approval

You receive a concept, sketches and a colour study before paint touches the wall. The proposal states how many revision rounds are included.

Most commissions take four to eight weeks from first conversation to finished wall. Painting itself is often four to eight days, depending on scale and access.

Travel and accommodation

I work between Spain and California and travel for the right project. Travel, accommodation and local access costs are agreed before anything is booked.

Insurance and site requirements

Insurance, vendor documents and site rules are confirmed during scoping. If your building requires specific cover or certificates, bring that into the first conversation.

Deposit and payment

A deposit reserves the painting dates and begins the design phase. The balance and project stages are written into the proposal before work starts.

Maintenance and lifespan

Interior work usually needs little beyond gentle cleaning. Exterior lifespan depends on sun, weather, substrate and care. I explain what the finished wall will need.
